Funchal punches well above its weight as a restaurant city. For an island this size, the range is extraordinary: three Michelin-starred tables, serious sushi, fire-driven grills, old sailing clubs with ocean views, and a handful of places the locals keep trying not to tell you about. Here is where to eat.

1. Desarma — Michelin Star, Rooftop Tasting Menu

The Views Baía hotel rooftop, Funchal. Chef Octávio Freitas has held a Michelin star three years running (2024, 2025, 2026) and shows no sign of slowing down. Desarma works on a tasting menu format — six, nine, or twelve moments — that treats traditional Madeiran products as the raw material for genuinely surprising cooking. The military name is a bit of theatre, but the food earns it. Book well in advance.

2. Gazebo — Historic Quinta, Seasonal Tasting Menu

Rua dos Ilhéus 30, Funchal. Chef Filipe Janeiro runs Gazebo from his family's century-old Madeiran quinta, with the kitchen in full view of the dining room. The tasting menus (North to South: 6 courses; East to West: 9 courses) are built entirely around island produce from small local suppliers. Michelin selected. The setting alone — an estate garden in the middle of the city — is worth the reservation.

3. Avista — Michelin Recommended, Seafront Sharing Plates

Estrada Monumental 145, Funchal. On a headland near the Lido with unobstructed views over the Atlantic, Avista is supervised by chef Benoît Sinthon and run day-to-day by chef João Luz. The concept is Mediterranean and Asian sharing plates — vibrant, seasonal, and carefully sourced. Arrive for sunset and stay for dinner. Michelin Recommended since 2020.

4. Ákua — Michelin Guide, Best Seafood in Funchal

Rua dos Murças 6, Funchal. Chef Júlio Pereira's seafood restaurant sits in the historic quarter, a few metres from the sea. The menu is built around what the Atlantic offers that morning: fish sausage with barbecue hot dog, cod tacos, braised tuna with razor clam rice, market fish with tomato migas and onion foam. Sit at the counter and watch the kitchen work. One of the most exciting meals you will eat on the island.

5. Kampo — Dry-Aged Beef, Open Kitchen

Rua do Sabão, Funchal Old Town. Where Ákua is about the sea, Kampo is about the land. Also by Chef Júlio Pereira, Kampo ages its Madeiran beef on-site for 30 to 90 days. The open kitchen runs along one wall; the counter seats are the best in the house. Seasonal small plates, volcanic-soil vegetables, and a serious wine list to match.

6. Brasa Fire & Cocktails — Open Fire, Great Drinks

Rua do Sabão 31, Funchal. Brasa does exactly what the name says: fire-driven cooking and well-made cocktails in a relaxed setting in the Old Town. The grilled meats and open-flame dishes come with the kind of smoke and char that only a real fire delivers. A great choice for a livelier evening that does not require a tasting menu commitment.

7. Sushi Mari — Best Sushi in Funchal

Estrada Monumental, Funchal (Monumental Lido area). Sushi Mari has been the go-to sushi restaurant on the island for years. The fish is fresh, the rolls are creative, and the value is excellent by any standard. The freestyle platters are the move. Bookings recommended in high season — this place fills up fast.

8. Prima Caju — Lunch Only, Downtown Funchal

Downtown Funchal. Prima Caju is a locals' lunch institution. They open for lunch only, which means you plan your morning around it. The food is honest, seasonal, and rooted in Madeiran tradition — the kind of place where the daily special is decided by what arrived at the market that morning. No frills, no theatre, just very good food at a fair price.

9. Clube Naval do Funchal — Seafront, Old-School Charm

Seafront, Funchal (former Quinta Calaça, between the Lido and the marina). The Clube Naval is one of Funchal's great old institutions: a historic sailing club with a restaurant right on the waterfront. The setting is the main event — tables facing the Atlantic, old sailing trophies on the walls, a menu of fresh seafood and Madeiran classics. Go for a long lunch on a sunny day and let the afternoon take care of itself.

All nine are within easy reach of the apartment. Make your reservations before you arrive — especially for Desarma, Gazebo, and Avista, where tables go weeks in advance.
