Madeira's levadas are irrigation channels carved into the mountains centuries ago. Today, the maintenance paths beside them form one of Europe's finest walking networks. The best part: many are nearly flat.

1. Levada dos Balcões (Ribeiro Frio)

1.5 km each way, almost no elevation. Ends at a balcony viewpoint over the central peaks. Chaffinches will eat from your hand. Allow 90 minutes round trip.

2. Levada do Caldeirão Verde (first section)

Start at Queimadas and walk as far as you like. The full route is demanding, but the first 3 km through UNESCO Laurissilva forest are gentle and magical. Turn back whenever you want.

3. Levada dos Tornos (Monte to Camacha)

Take the cable car up from Funchal, walk a shaded, mostly level path, and finish with tea at a quinta. Civilized hiking at its best.

4. Levada do Norte (Cabo Girão section)

Flat walking with views over banana terraces and the south coast. Combine with the Cabo Girão skywalk.

5. Vereda dos Balcões to Portela (partial)

Forest, birdsong, and picnic spots. Go at your own pace.

Practical tips for walkers

  • Wear shoes with grip. Levada paths can be damp.
  • Bring a light rain layer. Mountain weather changes fast.
  • Walking poles help on uneven sections and save your knees.
  • Check the official trail status before you go; paths close after heavy rain.

All five walks are within 45 minutes' drive of Funchal. Start from our apartment after breakfast and be back in time for a rooftop swim.
