Some of the world's great sunrises require a 4 a.m. trek. This one requires a 40-minute drive.
Pico do Areeiro stands at 1,818 meters, and a road takes you almost to the summit. Arrive in the dark, walk five minutes from the parking area, and watch the sky turn from deep blue to orange while a sea of clouds rolls below you. On clear mornings you can see Pico Ruivo and, in the distance, Porto Santo.
How to do it
- Leave Funchal about 90 minutes before sunrise. Check the exact time the night before.
- Dress warmly. It can be near freezing at the top, even when Funchal is 20 degrees.
- Bring a thermos of coffee and pastéis de nata. You will thank yourself.
- Stay 30 to 45 minutes after sunrise. The light on the peaks keeps improving.
If you want to walk
The famous Areeiro–Ruivo trail (PR1) starts here. The full route is serious hiking with tunnels and stairs. But you do not need to commit: walk the first 500 meters to the Ninho da Manta viewpoint and back. You get the drama without the strain.
Afterwards, drive down through Ribeiro Frio for a forest coffee stop, or head straight back for breakfast on your balcony. By 10 a.m. you have already had the best moment of most people's entire holiday.
