Somebody in your group has seen it on Instagram: jet-black sand, turquoise water, and green cliffs so steep they look photoshopped. That is Seixal, on Madeira's wild north coast. The photos are not exaggerating. If anything, they undersell it.

Why Seixal is worth the trip

Most volcanic islands have black beaches. Few have one like this. Seixal's sand is soft and fine, not pebbly, and the bay sits in a natural amphitheater of vine-covered cliffs. On calm days the water turns a surreal green-blue against the dark sand. The contrast is the whole show, and it photographs better than almost anywhere on the island.

Bonus attractions within walking distance

  • Seixal natural pools: volcanic rock pools five minutes away, free, and far quieter than the famous ones in Porto Moniz.
  • Véu da Noiva viewpoint: the bridal-veil waterfall dropping toward the sea, a two-minute stop on the drive in.
  • Anjos waterfall: a cascade that falls directly onto the old coastal road. You can stand under it. Someone in your group will. Bring a towel for them.

How to get there

Seixal sits on the north coast, about 45 minutes from Funchal by car via the VE4 through São Vicente. The drive itself is a highlight: you cross the island through tunnels and emerge into the greener, moodier north.

  • By car: easiest and best. Free parking near the beach, but it fills by late morning in summer. One car per four friends keeps costs low.
  • By bus: Rodoeste line 139 runs from Funchal, but connections are slow and infrequent. For a group, splitting a rental car or a taxi beats the bus every time.
  • Combine it: Seixal pairs perfectly with Porto Moniz (10 minutes further) and the São Vicente valley for a full north coast day.

Handy tips to make the most of it

  • Go before 10:30 or after 16:00. Midday brings tour groups and the harshest light. Morning gets you the beach nearly to yourselves.
  • Check the swell. The north coast gets waves. Calm summer days are perfect for swimming; if it is rough, swim in the natural pools instead and enjoy the beach for the scenery.
  • Black sand gets hot. Genuinely hot by early afternoon. Flip-flops are not optional.
  • Bring everything. Facilities are minimal: a small café nearby, little shade, no lounger rental armies. Pack water, snacks, and an umbrella if you plan to stay long.
  • The photo spot: shoot from the small pier or from the road above the bay for the full amphitheater view. Golden hour light on the cliffs is the money shot.
  • Stay for poncha. The village is tiny but has a couple of cafés. A round of poncha with wet hair and sandy feet is the correct way to end the visit.
  • Designate a driver or book a return taxi. The poncha rule applies to groups especially.

The verdict

Seixal is a half-day trip that feels like a different island. Dramatic, cheap, and effortlessly cool: exactly what a group of friends wants. Base yourselves in Funchal, hit Seixal in the morning, Porto Moniz for lunch, and be back at the rooftop pool by five with a camera roll full of proof.
